Golf is a gentleman’s sport; a saying entrenched in the minds and doings of golf players and golf lovers around the world. This is a sport that instills discipline and patience, a sport that requires a pristine reputation and character. Having held its weight for the last 3 years, the 4th edition of the Limpopo Championships is said to set fire to the province from the 31st March until the 3rd April, with the week’s activities starting a few days prior.

The 2022 Limpopo Championship will play a major role in a new expanded seven-tournament stretch of international Challenge Tour events being played in South Africa that will showcase the province of Limpopo to an even greater international audience.

The fourth edition of this tournament, presented by the Limpopo Tourism Agency and co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and Challenge Tour, will be played at both the Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate and Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate from 31 March to 3 April for a total purse of $250 000.

More significantly, it will be the penultimate tournament in a record stretch of seven Challenge Tour events being played on the Sunshine Tour in 2022, and which will bring the brightest young stars from both the Sunshine Tour and Europe to Limpopo fairways.

“Our province is a prime tourist destination and we have earmarked golf as one of the key tools to market what we can offer,” said Moses Ngubeni, acting CEO, Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA). “When the professional golfers and golf fans arrive here from all corners of the world, they will be presented with a holistic offering of wildlife, scenery, cultural attire, and traditional cuisines. For the LTA, this tournament also plays a significant role in promoting local businesses, especially small and medium enterprises.”

However, although the Limpopo Championships will bring a much-needed boost to the tourism sector and its economy, it will also be beneficial to the residents of the Mookgophong region. The tournament will contribute financially and socially to the young people and working-class of the Waterberg District, with a youth development program set to ''look at developing the skills of the young golfers in the area by having them attend the event, practice some golf, take part in some of the week’s festivities and have a chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Euphoria Golf Estate,'' said PGA member at Koro Creek Golf and Bushveld Estate; David Riddle.

‘’There will be opportunities for employment, and we want to let people know that this is a family-friendly area. We also want to reiterate that the tournament aims to contribute to this small town of Mookgophong,’’ said Andrew Dipela, Board Chairperson of Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA).

Even though the country is on alert level one and the lockdown restrictions have been re-adjusted to an almost back to a normal way of living, concerns surrounding COVID did arise; and when asked about the COVID regulations and how they may affect the tournament, Chairperson Dipela says that everyone from the Pros and Amateurs will be tested, ‘’if you don’t want to get tested then that means that you don’t want to play. Since the games will be played on consecutive weekends, there will be no screening, just COVID test, whether you are vaccinated or not’’. We would also like to encourage people to ‘’jab for tourism,’’ said the Chairperson.

Although international travel is very much welcomed to South African tourism, domestic travel should also be a point of interest, so the citizens of the country can enjoy the beauty of their home. However; it is easier said than done, as travel has become more expensive, bearing in mind the minimum wage of the average South African.

‘’Reigniting domestic travel should be the pillar of our marketing.’’ Chairperson Andrew Dipela

When asked ‘’What is being done to make tourism more affordable for the residents of the Waterberg District?’’ chairperson Dipela responded, ‘’I received a call from someone who was here; they complimented the place but they also complained about the exuberant pricing of the place.’’ We will be having a meeting with the industry and we need to speak about the issues of pricing, so we can meet in the middle. He further explains that ‘’ unfortunately the tourism establishments don’t belong to the government, they are privately owned and our task is to go and market them.’’

The week’s activities will begin with the official qualifying round on Monday 28 March, which is followed by the tournament pro-am on Tuesday 29 March. On Wednesday 30 March, the next generation of Limpopo golf stars will be hosted at a golf clinic that will give them exclusive coaching from some of the leading professionals in the field. The 72-hole tournament then tees off from Thursday to Sunday, with a host of entertainment and hospitality activities planned to also showcase the best of Limpopo.

Multiple Sunshine Tour champion Brandon Stone is expected to defend his title in a field that should also include two-time Limpopo Championship winner JC Ritchie and other stars and Sunshine Tour champions such as James Kamte, Toto Thimba Jnr., Jbe Kruger, and Hennie Otto.
