LET ART MEET FASHION
By: Debbie Bloodmoon
A fusion of cultures, exploding and defining fashion like they know how. Expression is important and every designer has a unique way of telling their story through fabrics, cuts, and silhouettes; a story one can only witness with visual excitement.
Every piece tells a story and, the Midwest Fashion Show proved to be a melting pot of collaborations from across the globe. From Haiti to America and all the way to Africa. Held on Saturday the 25 September 2021, at the Momo Gallery in the North of Johannesburg, the Art Meets Fashion-themed fashion show left us gasping for more and really allowed the connection between fashion and the history of South African heritage. An inaugural event this was, whose objective was ‘’ to showcase and facilitate new dialogue between the Midwest region of the U.S. and South Africa’’, said Berny Martin the owner of Catou wear and founder of the Midwest Fashion Show.
Hosted by Lionel Moise, the ABC News Anchor & Emmy Award-Winning Journalist, veterans like Carol Bouwer showed us that longevity is possible, with her excellent collector’s handbag, that any woman would break the bank for. Berny Martin, a Haitian-American who has graced runways and fashion shows across the world for about 16 years, showed us that fashion has no gender, and comfort and luxury do work well together. Inga Atelier and Heather Marie Designs, Arnreuby and Ifele, showing us that dreams are made through collaborations and 8wanda standing alone because excellence needs no invitation.
The show not only created conversations around arts and fashion and the direction in which the industry desires to take it, but it sparked honest conversations about the development of young designers and the economic development needed for their growth. The show created a platform of interaction between the designer and the audience.
